PLASTICFREE IN MAY: 3 DIYs to make your own care products

It is a fact that plastic has a huge impact on our planet and the environment. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce our plastic consumption, and one of them is by making products like deodorant, soap and toothpaste yourself. And best of all, it can be fun too - a WIN-WIN!

Let's start by making the Deodorant.

What do we need for this?

  • 3 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • 3 tablespoons of baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons of cornstarch
  • Optional: a few drops of essential oil (such as lavender or citrus)

Let's get started!

Step #1: Melt the coconut oil au bain-marie until liquid.

Step #2: Remove the coconut oil from the heat and add the baking soda and cornstarch. Stir well until smooth.

Step #3: If desired, add a few drops of essential oil and stir the mixture well again.

Step #4: Pour the mixture into a glass jar or an empty deodorant container and let it cool until it hardens.

This recipe is suitable for all skin types. You may need to reapply the deodorant occasionally, especially on hot days or after exercising.

Next up: Soap

Ingredients:

  • 500 grams of glycerine soap base
  • Silicone mould
  • Optional: dye
  • Optional: a few drops of essential oil

How to get started:

Step #1: Cut the glycerine soap base into small pieces and place in the microwave-safe bowl.

Step #2: Melt the soap base in the microwave for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Stir the soap base well until it is completely melted.

Step #3: Add colouring and essential oils to the melted soap base and mix well.

Step #4: Pour the melted soap into the silicone mould and let it cool at room temperature for 2-3 hours.

Step #5: Once the soap has fully hardened, remove it from the mould. If the soap is difficult to get out of the mould, place the mould briefly in the freezer to speed up the process.

Step #6: Cut the soap into the desired shape and size and store in a dry place.

That's it! With these simple steps, you can make your own soap at home. Good luck and have fun!

Finally, we're making the toothpaste:

What do we need for this?
  • 6 tablespoons of baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 10-15 drops of  peppermint oil
Here's how to make it:

Step #1: Melt the coconut oil in the microwave or au bain-marie until liquid.

Step #2: Mix the melted coconut oil and baking soda in a bowl until smooth.

Step #3: Add the peppermint oil and mix.

Step #4: Store the toothpaste in an airtight container.

You can also use other essential oils to customise the taste and smell of the toothpaste to your preference.

And That's it! It can be that easy to make your own personal care products, in a fun and plastic-free way!
