Energy prices are skyrocketing. 🚀 And you might be wondering how to save a penny or two. Opting for a sustainable home makes a huge difference at the end of the month. However, we have four more easy ways for you to save your hard-earned money by living more sustainably.

 #1 Combat food waste
On average, each person throws away about 34 kg of food per year.

Ever thought about using a weekly meal planner? It helps you to make an overview of your groceries in advance and reduces impulse buying.

Do you have still have leftovers? Then ask your neighbors or friends if you can do them a favor with your surpluses. Or search for local Facebook groups that collect them for the less fortunate in your neighborhood.

A useful app to combat food waste is Too Good To Go. Through this app you can buy surpluses from restaurants, bakeries, hotels, supermarkets, etc. for a small price.

Chickens are also an eco-friendly way to avoid food waste. In all Upliving projects, these feathered friends enjoy the residents' food scraps. Smart huh?

#2 Be aware of what's on your plate
Do you occasionally question what you’re consuming? Fish and meat are part of the daily diet of many amongst us. Unfortunately, this also has its impact on the environment.

Cutting fish and meat out of your diet overnight may be a bit extreme. But why not try cooking veggie a few times a week? Eggs, legumes and nuts are great meat substitutes that provide you with the nutrients you need.Besides, you’ll quickly see the difference in your spending.

#3 Buy more consciously
Every year the garbage mountain grows bigger. Fast fashion has a big impact on our world. We buy and throw away too much. So here are some tips.

People are buying more and more second-hand and we can only encourage this trend. Through apps like Vinted you can find beautiful, often unworn pieces for small prices. Like to try things on? In stores like Think Twice you can score nice, and often unique clothes. Definitely worth a visit if you’re a vintage-lover.

Besides clothing, you can often score a good deal on furniture by checking out Facebook Marketplace. The pieces usually are very affordable, plus you can totally pimp them yourself.

Would you like to expand your cutlery drawer or mug collection? 😉 At the thrift store you can often find gems for a few euros.

#4 Adapt your living habits
Going for a sustainable home, such as our Upliving apartments, will help you use less energy. But here are some other tips you can implement quickly:
  • Put on an (extra) sweater and save 7% energy by turning down the heating by 1 °C.
  • Close your curtains or blinds at night to save heat.
  • The ideal cooling temperature of a fridge is 4 to 6 °C. Each degree lower corresponds to 5% extra consumption. In addition, the refrigerator also consumes more according to how much is inside.
